ABOUT Nadine Hinton-Davis

Born in Philadelphia, PA, I was interested in art and at an early age. After completing an art magnet high school, I received my BFA in Photography and Design from Tyler School of Art. A few years later I received my MFA in Visual Arts from Mason Gross School of Arts at Rutgers University. Throughout my college and graduate school years, I was also teaching art and photography to kids and adults in different kinds of programs, schools and community groups in both Philadelphia and New Jersey. After graduate school, I began my K-12 teaching career which I continue, 34 years and counting. The best part about teaching art to kids is that it forces me to constantly come up with new and creative ways to make art and express myself.

My Vision

I used to think of myself as “a girl with a camera”, and I loved people watching and photographing them. I enjoyed creating back stories for them. “Where are they going? How are they related? What might they be talking about? For years, that was all I photographed. If it didn’t have people in it, it was boring. As I got older and began to slow down both physically and metaphysically, I began to appreciate nature and the beauty it presented. I realized that when pondering and photographing a landscape, I’d often asked myself the same questions I would ask of my social photographs. “Where am I going”? “How are we related”? “What is it saying to me”? I hope that they speak to you too! So now you might be wondering, how did we get from photography to jewelry and crafts? Well, that’s an easy one. I became an art teacher. Teaching art K-12, doing painting, drawing crafts, etc., I found that some of the projects I was doing with the kids would spark a special interest to me creatively. Jewelry is one of those projects that began with the kids but stuck with me long after the project was done. I thought to myself,” I think you might be a “maker” too. Not a jeweler but an artist who makes jewelry or paints or crafts or sculpts or photographs when the medium speaks to me.

I really hope that my works speaks to you too and if you are interested in purchasing anything not in this collection, drop me a note in the contacts. I would love to create something just for you.
